State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, hailed changes made to newly approved state teaching standards in a statement issued last week but also described the new standards as an “overreach far beyond the state’s basic role of licensing qualified educators.”
During a Feb. 18 meeting, members of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted, 6-5 along party lines, to approve the implementation of culturally responsive teaching and leading standards for those seeking professional educator licenses in Illinois. The standards will be required for all state-endorsed professional educator licenses in teaching, school support personnel and administrative fields.
