Help wanted: Oswego School District job openings on rise

Superintendent again invites applicants for more than 200 open positions

The number of job openings in the Oswego School District 308 has increased, just one week after Superintendent John Sparlin invited the public to apply for jobs during an Oct. 12 Board of Education meeting.

As of Oct. 13, OSD 308 had 196 job vacancies across 18 departments listed on its Applitrack job application website. As of Oct. 19, the district has 201 open positions in 19 departments listed on the same website.

However, some district departments have seen drops in their number of vacancies in recent weeks. For example, the transportation department has dropped from 49 openings in late August, to just nine openings as of Tuesday.

Other departments are experiencing vacancies numbering in the double digits. A total of 31 athletic coaches or activity sponsors are currently being sought by the district, while the Special Education department has 41 vacancies for teachers and assistants.

Sparlin made a second request for the public to apply to work at the district during an Oct. 18 YouTube video message to the community.

“I would like to ask for your help in spreading the word about the many job opportunities we have in our district,” Sparlin said in the video. “We have positions open for teaching assistants, bus drivers, bus monitors, substitute teachers, custodians, and nurses.

“If you would like to work with kids, want to make a difference in the lives of students and our community, and would like to build positive relationships and memories for children that will help them grow into strong and successful adults, we have a position for you.”

District staff are using “creative ways” to recruit new employees, Sparlin said, but positions remain open.

“We are still faced with a staffing shortage,” he said. “Please help spread the word and encourage others to consider even a part-time role within our district.”

OSD 308 officials have not returned requests for further comment.
