Yorkville police investigating theft of ‘several’ catalytic converters from business, one from vehicle

The Yorkville Police Department is investigating the theft of several catalytic converters Oct. 14, from both a private vehicle and an area business.

Catalytic converters are exhaust emission control devices that convert toxic gases and pollutants in vehicle exhaust into less-toxic pollutants.

Officers took a report of the theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle at 11:26 a.m. Oct. 14 in the 1100 block of South Bridge Street. The second theft was reported at 7:14 a.m. Oct. 14 at a business in the 100 block of South Cannonball Trail.

Deputy Chief of Police Behr Pfizenmaier said that it is “speculation” that the two incidents are connected, but the investigations are ongoing.

“Obviously, it’s very suspicious to us that you’ve got two kind of unique crimes committed in your town,” Pfizenmaier said.

Although an exact monetary value was not determined for the stolen converters, Pfizenmaier said that both crimes would be filed as felony theft.

Both investigations are ongoing. Those with information are asked to call the Yorkville Police Department at 630-553-4340.
