High school sports roundup for Saturday, Oct. 16: Newark volleyball second at Bradley Bourbonnais tournament

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Newark

Newark (25-6) took second at the Bradley Bourbonnais Moldenhaur Classic, losing in the finals to southern Illinois Class 4A power Belleville West 25-18, 25-22. The Lady Norsemen reached the final four of the tournament by beating Wilmington 25-16, 25-17 and Momence 25-11, 25-11, and then beat Bradley Bourbonnais in the semifinals 13-25, 25-16, 18-16.

Newark’s Lauren Ulrich and Megan Williams were named to the all-tournament team.

Yorkville

The Foxes ended up finishing second in their bracket at the Plainfield Fall Harvest tournament. On Saturday Yorkville beat St. Charles North 25-18, 17-25, 25-23 and Timothy Christian 25-23, 25-14 before losing to Wauwakee (Wisc.) 25-23, 25-23.

Overall, the Foxes went 3-2 in their matches this weekend. Ella Bourque had 39 kills, 68 assists and 27 digs, Saige Avery 33 kills, 53 assists, 26 digs and 11 aces, Janelle Pye-Blacknard 39 kills and 24 digs, Keelyn Muell 25 kills, 15 digs and four blocks, Grace Lindgren 40 digs and four aces and Kendall Heinz 10 blocks.

Sandwich

The Indians took third in the Plano Tournament. Sandwich (15-17-1) split with Lisle 19-25, 25-20, beat LaMoille 25-12, 25-6, beat St. Bede 26-24, 18-25, 15-12, lost to Genoa-Kington 25-10, 25-17 and beat Earlville 25-23, 25-20. Alana Stahl, named to the all-tournament team, had 14 kills, 39 service points and four blocks and Alexis Sexton 76 assists and 23 digs. Audrey Rome had 31 kills and 13 blocks, Claire Allen 24 kills, 12 digs and 24 service points, Kaylin Herrin eight blocks and nine kills and Emily Gomez 40 digs and 11 service points.
