High school sports roundup for Monday, May 24: Max Pesola’s walk-off double rallies Yorkville past Plainfield North

BASEBALL

Yorkville 8, Plainfield North 7

Max Pesola hit a two-out, two-strike walk-off double to score two runs for the Foxes’ come-from-behind win in the Southwest Prairie West.

Pesola was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Matt Bivens had a double, walk, hit by pitch and two runs scored, Kyle Mack had an RBI, Ryan Buck an RBI and run scored and Luke Hanson an RBI for Yorkville (12-11-1, 5-8). Owen Ross notched the win in relief.

Yorkville Christian 15, Parkview Christian 1

Bryce Edwards went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, Blake Salek went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs and Trey Lombardo and Donny Barbanente combined on a five-inning no-hitter for the Mustangs (14-6). Lombardo struck out five over three innings and Barbanente struck out three over two. Andrew Fox was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Newark 6, Serena 1

Newark’s Joe Martin struck out 16 in a four-hitter, and Jared Slivka, Tegan Kruser, and Logan Benesh all had multiple hits to lead the Norsemen (15-1, 11-0).

Sycamore 17, Sandwich 0

The Spartans scored 10 runs in the second inning and went on to the three-inning win.

SOFTBALL

Yorkville 2, Lincoln-Way West 1

Sam Davidowski doubled and drove in pinch runner Ally Stancel with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, and Mackenzie Melzer had the play of the game in center field, stealing a home run to end the game in the bottom of the eighth. Madi Reeves struck out 14 and and allowed just one earned run on five hits and Taylor Warren drove in a run in the fifth inning for the Foxes (18-3).

Oswego East 11, Plainfield South 8

Madye Greenwood went 3-for-4 with a homer, two singles and four RBIs, and Morgan Robertson went 3-for-4 with a single, two doubles and three RBIs for the Wolves (12-7, 7-3).

Newark 10, Serena 4

Kailey Wohead had three hits and four RBIs at the plate, and winning pitcher Kaitlyn Schofield struck out nine and allowed just three hits for the Lady Norsemen. Emily Schofield had three hits and Danica Peshia two RBIs.

BOYS TENNIS

Aurora Central Catholic 4, Yorkville 3

Jack Anderson and Jacob Kremer won singles matches and Peter Standert and Cole Maury won their doubles match for the Foxes.

GIRLS SOCCER

Oswego East 7, Yorkville 0

Riley Gumm scored three goals, Erika Smiley two and Hannah Chval and Loryn Paribello each one for the Wolves. Kailey Tyburski had two assists and Abbey Scott, Paribello, Abby Triska, Smiley and Sammy Anderson one each.
