Blake Hamblin struck out 10 in five innings of work, and Gavin Arseneau had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs for the Panthers in their season opener. Tyler Stack also had two hits.

Newark 17, Yorkville Christian 4

Winning pitcher Dalton Riebel threw 69 pitches in four innings of work.

Oswego East 3, Romeoville 2

The Wolves beat Romeoville 3-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Southwest Prairie Conference Tournament. Oswego East advances to play at Plainfield North at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

LaSalle-Peru 4, Sandwich 2

Luis Baez and Steve Aguilar scored goals for the Indians (0-12) at the Interstate Eight Conference tournament. Johnathan Carlson had 13 saves in goal for Sandwich, which improved on its 7-1 loss to L-P from earlier in the season.

“Like the Kaneland rematch, the Indians were looking to respond to a mid-season 7-1 loss, the Indians showed up ready to play,” Sandwich coach Aaron Mlot said. Working hard on the little things and fundamentals, and hoping to make the necessary growth over the course of the past couple of weeks, the Indians left it all on the field.”

Vincent Herbig scored two goals, both assisted by Alexis Arellano, for the Reapers. Herbig also had nine saves in goal.
