Keep furnace filters out of the recycling bin

In order to keep your furnace running as efficiently as possible, it’s important to regularly change out the filter.

Professionals recommend that being done at least every three months.

So what to do with those dirty, dusty filters that are piling up? Unfortunately, they cannot be recycled and must be thrown away due to some of the materials they contain.

Because of the shift toward single stream recycling, it is imperative people avoid mixing in items that cannot be recycled, such as furnace filters, with those that can. Improper disposal means each year environmental service providers such as Advanced Disposal and local governments have to spend millions of dollars removing items that shouldn’t be in the recycling stream or must discard overly contaminated items that could have been recycled.

Another thing to keep in mind: when disposing of your furnace filters, make sure to place them in a bag to prevent the spread of allergens.

Looking for a more environmentally-friendly solution to keep your furnace running efficiently?

Consider purchasing reusable filters as opposed to disposable ones. While they might cost more money up front, they can be washed and reused over and over again.

You can also contact an HVAC company or supplier to see if they accept used filters for disposal.
