@Your Batavia Public Library: Get to know your library this summer

The relaxed months of summer are a great time to discover how the library can assist, educate and even entertain you. Plus, there is still time to join in the fun and register for the Batavia Public Library’s Summer Reading Club.

You can earn rewards while reading, listening, watching, or engaging with the library. Take on one or more of the fun challenges in Beanstack, our Summer Reading Club app. The challenges might have you learning how to use your Batavia Public Library card to stream or download movies and television shows, discover new recipes, read papers and magazines from around the world, listen to music, or subscribe to our library newsletters.

Participating in the Summer Reading Club is also an excellent way to encourage yourself to read more. You may have already finished one or more books this summer, and perhaps you need help finding additional books that interest you. The librarians are ready to help you and have many ways for you to find your next read. Call or text the library and connect directly with the staff. Find book lists for all ages on our website. Fill out the request form for a Surprise Me Bundle and get matched with a personalized bag of books, video games, movies, or other materials. Or subscribe to our booklist newsletters and get new suggestions in your email box every month. You will find all these resources on our website at BataviaPublicLibrary.org.

July is a fun time to take advantage of the library’s events which are always free. Here are just a few of the many programs happening in July.

Adults will enjoy Museum of Bad Art: Tough Times - Having a Bad Day to Dystopian Apocalypse, a funny exploration of art, on July 20. Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) curator Michael Frank explores how artists react to disasters, small and large, real and imagined. MOBA has acquired their collection from thrift stores, yard sales, sidewalk trash, and even the artists themselves—the collection celebrates art that won’t be seen in any other venue. Please register for this online event through the library’s website at BataviaPublicLibrary.org.

Your family can join Library Youth Services staff on Water Street for a fun and easy drop-in craft, weather permitting, on Fridays, July 2 and July 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. This event does not require registration.

Join us at the Peg Bond Center on July 15 at 7 p.m. and enjoy a rare chance to get a closer look at animals from The Animal Express. Staff will introduce families to several animals, from cute and cuddly to exotic, and talk about the animals’ day-to-day lives. The Batavia Park District is co-sponsoring this event. Registration begins July 1 through the library’s website at BataviaPublicLibrary.org.

On your family’s way home from the Saturday Farmer’s Market, stop by the library’s Reading Garden on July 24 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for a Story Stroll. You’ll enjoy reading pages from The Hike by Alison Ferrell while enjoying a walk around the garden.

Please see the library’s website at BataviaPublicLibrary.org for more information about events and classes.

Patricia Leonard is the promotional services manager for the Batavia Public Library. The “@ Your Library” column runs the fourth Thursday of each month.
