Breaking: Kane Sheriff reports death of jail detainee

Chicago man, 66, found unresponsive

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP –A 66-year-old Kane County Jail detainee has died, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain announced Tuesday in a news release.

Luis A. Gonzalez, of the 1300 block of Campbell Avenue in Chicago, was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:56 a.m. Jan. 11 during a routine round of a cell block, prompting corrections officers to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use an automated external defibrillator, but were unable to resuscitate him, the release stated.

Paramedics from Fox River and Countryside Fire Department continued CPR and revived a pulse before Gonzalez was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva where he died a short time later, the release stated.

Gonzalez had been held at the Kane County Jail since June 22 on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under age 13, the release stated.

Gonzalez was being held on $100,000 bond, requiring $10,000 or 10% in order to be released.

Gonzalez did have pre-existing medical conditions, was not COVID-vaccinated, was non-symptomatic for COVID, and last tested negative for COVID on Dec. 10, 2021, the release stated.

Pursuant to Illinois law, the death must be investigated by an outside entity.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is now conducting the investigation, which is ongoing, the release stated.
