Mystery Diner in St. Charles: Jalapeño Grille masters art of Mexican favorites
The casual Mexican restaurant is in a brick, former gas station that sits on its own island ringed by roads, and conveniently has its own parking lot. Opened in 2003, the eatery three years later was transformed into a work of art with murals by St. Charles native Joe Gagnepain of Art by Joseph. The mural wraps all of the structure's walls with exquisitely rendered images from whimsical to serious portraiture. It's a beautifully conceived work, with a surprise around every corner. Inside the fast-casual restaurant, both the expansive entry and dining room are filled with Mexican folk art and Latin movie posters. People can phone in orders or walk in and head straight back to the counter to order food. A separate window near the door is where orders are picked up. Large blackboards list the menu, or one can pick up a paper menu from a wall display. (Shaw Media)
