Key pass plays lift Milledgeville to victory over Amboy

MILLEDGEVILLE – Milledgeville quarterback Connor Nye had three touchdown passes in a 24-12 victory over Amboy in an 8-man high school football game on Friday.

Nye had 10 pass completions for 145 yards. Twice he threw to Bryce Aude for scores.

But it was a 7-yard TD pass to Ashton Nobis that secured the victory. It came with 8:37 left in the the third.

“Protection was much better. And we made some nice plays,” said Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble. “We’ve got some good receivers and a good quarterback that can stretch the field.”

Amboy scored on a pass play from the 6-yard line to Joe Quest with 9:48 to go in the fourth and had wrestled away momentum.

“Happy they came back and fought back. Didn’t give up,” said Amboy coach Scott Payne.

Amboy's Joe Quest (35) takes a handoff from quarterback Tucker Lindenmeyer (3) on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, in 8-man football in Milledgeville.

Kicker Quinn Leffelman attempted a hard-to-handle onsides boot that did bounce around before stopping on the ground unclaimed for an instant, but Milledgeville recovered.

But then the Missiles went on a 20-play possession, which ended with Nye taking a knee at the 21 to seal it.

Nobis was reliable on the drive, taking the bulk of the carries. He finished the game with 22 carries for 67 yards.

Milledgeville led 16-6 at halftime.

The big play was a 45-yard touchdown heave from Nye to Aude with 45.2 seconds left in the second quarter. On the previous play, a penalty had backed it up 15 yards.

Milledgeville’s other score was a Nye pass to Aude from the 15 with 1:38 left in the first quarter.

Amboy’s first touchdown was a run to the outside by Tucker Lindenmeyer from the 1-yard line. It was Amboy’s fourth play from the 1, after getting the outstanding field position by blocking a Milledgeville punt.

Both teams are now 1-1. Milledgeville hosts River Ridge next week, while Amboy is home against Polo.
