Soucie: Week 9 live updates and updated playoff brackets

Updating the 256-team playoff field as Week 9 results come in

4:29: Class 1A: 163-319

2A: 324.5-416.5

3A: 423-548

4A: 552-793 (Rochester largest 4A).

5A: 812.5-1303

6A: 1311.5-1739.5

7A: 1747.5-2237.5

8A: 2264 and up

4:26 p.m.: 257 teams will finish with five victories or more, one will be left out on points (Warrensburg-Latham).

4:00 p.m.: Small adjustment made to 2A south seeds.

3:59 p.m.: 3A south seeds adjusted

3:56 p.m.: 8A seeds adjusted for Hinsdale Central win over Glenbard West.

3:53 p.m.: With Von Steuben loss, 257 teams have reached five wins. One 4-4 result still outstanding (Rich Township vs. Leo)

2:57 p.m.: If Von Steuben wins game against Urban-Prep Bronzeville, they will earn a spot in the field as a Class 6A team, bumping Villa Grove (Class 1A) from the field. To make up for the spot shift, Momence shifts to 1A, Fairfield shifts to 2A, Kewanee shifts to 3A, Evergreen Park to 4A and Lakes goes to 5A.

12:21 p.m.: Several seeds adjusted in Class 8A.

12:11 p.m.: Slight seed adjustment in Class 7A.

12:02 p.m.: Seed adjustment in Class 6A.

11:52 a.m.: Seed adjustment in Class 5A.

11:36 a.m.: A note about 4A seeding. If Rochester stays in 4A, they are officially tied with Breese Central with 41 points. A random number generator will assign the No. 1 and No. 2 seed.

11:21 a.m.: Seed adjustments in Class 3A.

11:05 a.m.: Seed adjustments in Class 2A.

10:53 a.m.: Seed adjustments in Class 1A.

9:39 a.m.: There are four 4-4 teams playing Saturday. Beardstown and Rich Township are projected to win. Steinmetz, Von Steuben are not.

• Beardstown qualifies with a win.

• If Von Steuben wins, they make the 6A field and bump out Villa Grove from the field. There would be several bubble changes.

• If Von Steuben and Steinmetz both win, Steinmetz would miss on points.

• If Steinmetz wins and Von Steuben loses, Steinmetz would bump out Villa Grove from the field.

• If Rich Township wins, they would only make the field if Beardstown, Von Steuben and Steinmetz all lost.

9:38 a.m.: Fixed a seeding issue in 5A.

9:32 a.m.: Updated 8A and 7A brackets and slight adjustment to 6A bracket.

9 a.m.: I’ve archived Friday’s live updates at the bottom of this post. Working now to confirm some additional numbers before making updates to brackets.

Friday’s updates

2:54 a.m.: All 8 Classes updated; will break down tiebreakers and look into how we got here as well as discuss some Saturday scenarios in the morning.

1:14 a.m.: Class 8A brackets revised

11:40 p.m.: Still tracking down the last 50 scores or so, and then back into the bracket lab. ETA: 1 a.m. for some new brackets.

11:15 p.m.: It looks all but over for 4-5 hopefuls. 255 teams have 5 wins or more, with four 4-4 teams playing on Saturday. 3 of those 4 teams are playing teams with losing records.

10:28 p.m.: Scores are streaming in and it is still too early to call it but I think there’s going to be enough 4-4 surprise winners tonight to push out almost all, if not all, 4-5 hopefuls.

10 p.m.: 230 teams have five wins or more; no result on 47 4-4′s.

9:32 p.m.: Greenville, as a 4-4, up three touchdowns on 6-2 Vandalia, another new bid in play.

9:31 p.m.: Lincoln-Way West takes a bid in a 4-4 showdown game with Homewood-Flossmoor, winning 17-10.

9:19 p.m.: DuQuoin also breaks through with a win to earn an non-projected bid with a 28-14 win over Murphysboro.

9:15 p.m.: Oak Forest drops down to the 4-5 group with a loss to Lemont.

9:08 p.m.: Yorkville on the verge of taking down the first not projected team into the field. For now, they take the spot of a team slated to make the field with 4-5 record and points (Effingham).

9:07 p.m.: First bracket has been revised. The northern portion of the Class 4A bracket has seen changes.

9:00 p.m.: 219 teams now have at least five victories.

8:59 p.m.: Sandburg locks up its bid with a 59-17 win over Lincoln-Way Central.

8:58 p.m.: Chicago Sullivan will slide down in the seeds in the Class 4A bracket after its loss to Hyde Park.

8:56 p.m.: Yorkville just extended its lead to 40-26 on the verge of grabbing a bid that was not projected for them. Seven minutes to play.

8:55 p.m.: Jacksonville moves ahead of Decatur MacArthur 16-13 with 4 minutes left in the third quarter in a matchup of 4-4 teams.

8:54 p.m.: With a 28-15 win over Leyden, Downers Grove South sews up a spot in the field with their fifth win.

8:51 p.m.: The first 4-4 hopeful falls down to the 4-5 group: Andrew loses 45-15 to Lockport, who finishes a splendid season with an 8-1 record and a likely top five seed in the Class 8A draw.

8:49 p.m.: In a showdown of 4-4 teams, Lincoln-Way West leads Homewood-Flossmoor 14-3 heading into the fourth quarter.

8:48 p.m.: In what I considered to be a toss-up game, DuQuoin, needing a win, trails Murphysboro 14-13 at the end of the third quarter.

8:46 p.m.: Down 14-0 at one point, Brother Rice comes storming back to collect a 40-21 win over Marist. Now the Crusaders wait for their classification (7A or 8A) with a 7-2 record.

8:45 p.m.: Yorkville is really answering the bell here. Every time it looks like Oswego is bridging the gap, the Foxes have answered, leading 33-20 with 9:55 to play.

8:44 p.m.: A team I was monitoring as a possible 4-5 team to qualify, Waterloo, finds itself down 21-7 in the third quarter against Freeburg in a must-win situation for Waterloo.

8:43 p.m.: Shepard appears to be closing in on a rare trick. The Astros started the season 0-4, and are now looking for their fifth consecutive win to make the field, leading Argo 28-6 at half.

8:36 p.m.: East St. Louis trails national power IMG Academy 28-8 in the third quarter.

8:14 p.m.: Minooka, needing a win to get in, is tied with West Aurora at 7 at halftime.

8:13 p.m.: Bishop McNamara not fooling around in trying to earn its fifth win up 27-0 over Riverside-Brookfield after the first quarter.

8:12 p.m.: Other 4-4 games at halftime: Decatur MacArthur 7, Jacksonville 3; Highland 21, Effingham 14.

8:08 p.m.: Kaneland up over LaSalle-Peru in the second quarter. Kaneland is another 4-4 team hoping to punch its way into the field against a team with a better record than them.

7:57 p.m.: Nazareth leads Benet 12-0 just before half. This is one of seven games featuring a pair of 4-4 teams statewide.

7:55 p.m.: Yorkville now leads Oswego 20-7 at halftime.

7:20 p.m.: Yorkville out to a 14-0 lead on Oswego. The Foxes are one of the 27 teams at 4-4 playing an opponent that entered the game with a better record than 4-4.

7:17 p.m.: Kankakee off to a fast start against long time nemesis, Crete-Monee, leading 14-0 in the first quarter. If Kankakee stays in 5A they could end up as the No. 1 seed in the southern bracket.

6:44 p.m.: Just want to say this before it all falls apart in a few hours. I didn’t miss a single game on Wednesday and Thursday, haven’t done that in 16 years.

6:33 p.m.: Couple of things to keep note of. A few of the 4-4 teams under the microscope won’t be contested until Saturday.

• Raby vs. Steinmetz, 10 a.m.: Raby can knock Steinmetz out of the field, earning its sixth win in the process. But if Steinmetz wins the game a spot in the field must be created for them if we do indeed have to take four-win teams, one would have to be removed to give a spot to Steinmetz, who will have five wins with a win Saturday.

• Von Steuben vs. Urban-Prep Bronzeville, 1 p.m.: If Urban Prep Bronzeville wins, they would have a very strong chance to be a 4-5 team in the field with high playoff points. If Von Steuben wins, they would get into the field as a five-win team. The projection has Urban Prep-Bronzeville winning and placed in the 4A field, but if Von Steuben wins they would be in the 6A field and require some shuffling of teams on the fence between 4A/5A/6A.

5 p.m.: Some facts as we headed into Friday night’s games:

• 148 teams have won at least six games and have clinched playoff berths.

• Four other teams (Morgan Park, Cahokia, Willowbrook, Riverside-Brookfield) have won conference championships and have not (or will not) reach six victories. (Conference champions receive automatic bids to the playoffs as long as the league has a minimum of six teams participating).

• That leaves 152 of 256 playoff bids secured.

• 68 teams have five wins at this stage and 68 more enter Friday night’s games with four wins.

Of the group of 4-4 teams seven games feature two teams both at 4-4. There are 27 games with 4-4 teams playing teams with better records and 28 games where 4-4 teams are playing opponents with inferior records.
