Record Newspapers Football Capsules for Week 5

Southwest Prairie Conference

Yorkville (3-1, 2-1) at Oswego (3-1, 2-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Last matchup: Oswego 28, Yorkville 20 (2019)

About the Foxes: Yorkville is no doubt itching to get back on the football field after an uncharacteristic 48-6 blowout loss to Minooka last week, a game in which things quickly snowballed out of control. Expect the Foxes to come back with tighter execution and their typical hard-nosed effort. Running the ball is no easy chore against Oswego’s front seven, but expect the Foxes to establish Deajeion Lewis (329 yards for the season) on the ground to open things up for Luke Davies and Co. through the air.

About the Panthers: Oswego’s Senior Night is the team’s first and only game at Ken Pickerill Stadium this spring, so expect the Panthers to be fired up to play well on their home turf. The status of senior quarterback Cole Pradel, who has missed the last two weeks with a knee injury, is uncertain, but junior Julian Toma has acquitted himself well in Pradel’s absence. Whoever is behind center will certainly be looking for big 6-foot-5 Deakon Tonielli. Don’t be surprised to see a crisp effort from the Panthers coming off that emotional crosstown loss.

FND Pick: Oswego

Oswego East (2-2, 1-2) at Plainfield North (2-2, 1-1)

When: 6 p.m. Friday

Last matchup: Plainfield North 14, Oswego East 9 (2019)

About the Wolves: First and foremost, the Wolves need to guard against the inevitable emotional letdown after their enormous crosstown win last Friday. Will Oswego East continue to involve Michael Ford in the run game, key to its success in the second half last week? It makes for a tough three-man attack with speedster Darquel Sanders and physical sophomore Oshobi Odior. Two-way lineman Braydon Grabavoy anchors a Wolves’ defense that put forth a yeoman effort against Oswego.

About the Tigers: Plainfield North’s defense has been very good in Southwest Prairie games, but it certainly could use a little more help on offense. The majority of Plainfield North’s points of late have come via special teams, particularly Carlos Conley, who has been a dynamo in the Tigers return game.
