Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, Will County regional superintendent of schools since 2006, won election to the Illinois Senate on Tuesday.
Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, defeated Republican Garrett Peck, a Plainfield village trustee, 41,766 votes to 37,439 to win the new 49th Senate District position.
The district extends from the Shorewood and Crest Hill areas to Oswego.
Bertino-Tarrant has two years left on her second term as regional school superintendent. Her replacement will be appointed by the Will County Board and must be a Democrat.
Bertino-Tarrant was a teacher at Providence Catholic High School and principal at Channahon Junior High School before being elected to the superintendent's post.
She holds a doctorate from Loyola University and has taught evening classes for teacher and graduate students at Olivet Nazarene University and Joliet Junior College.
Her salary as regional superintendent is $107,640. The base salary for a state legislator is $67,836.
Roth polls 63 percent
State Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, easily won her first election Tuesday with 63 percent of the vote in the 86th House District. The vote total was 27,229 for Roth to 16,225 for Jeremy Ly, a Democrat and Grundy County Board member from Minooka.
With the new map, the 86th no longer includes Bourbonnais, Limestone and the west half of Kankakee County. It still includes the Wilmington-Braidwood area of Will County, most of Grundy County and points north and west.
Roth was appointed to the House in January 2011.
Sue Rezin, R-Morris, had defeated former Rep. Careen Gordon, D-Morris, in November 2010, but was appointed to the 43rd Senate District seat after former Sen. Gary Dahl retired. Rezin was elected Tuesday with 54 percent of the vote — 46,790 votes to 40,367 for Democrat Christine Benson, of Ottawa.
