Seasonal Depression Awareness

Seasonal depression awareness

Every time of year has it’s challenges.

During winter, seniors face an elevated danger of falling or having adequate warmth. These may seem like common concerns, but they can lead to other hazards, too.

One of these, is seasonal depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This is a common mental health condition that affects a person’s overall wellbeing, and can be heightened in seniors, especially during the cold winter months. Everyone feels a bit down from time to time, but if sadness, or severe emotions persist during this time of year, it could be a sign of the disorder.

As the name implies, seasonal depression changes with the seasons. but it’s effects during winter are a bit easier to identify.

Experiencing SAD does not equate to clinical depression, although the symptoms are similar.

Common symptoms of SAD are anxiety, restlessness, loss of appetite, declining interest in most activities, and a reduction in overall daily energy. These symptoms tend to increase with cold, harsh weather.

Like many cases of depression, SAD can be treated with behavioral therapy and prescribed antidepressants.

Sometimes, seniors are misdiagnosed for SAD because of other existing conditions. Additionally, research indicates that a lack of Vitamin D may contribute to, or worsen, mental health problems. That is on top of the physical health benefits the vitamin provides.

The good news is that SAD can be treated effectively with simple steps like maintaining a healthy diet, getting adequate rest, and therapy – depending on the severity of the symptoms. Community support and engaging in enjoyable social activities can also help treat seasonal affective disorder, which are some of the ways assisted living can be a great benefit.
