What to Know About the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period

Having the right healthcare that we need is a crucial factor at every stage of our lives, and it’s even more important as we age.

For seniors turning 65, enrolling in Medicare is a milestone not to be taken for granted. This year, the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period begins October 7 and runs through December 15, 2021.

Medicare plans tend to be complex with a lot of moving parts. The language and various options can be confusing at first glance. Here are some important things to know before enrolling.

Annual Enrollment Period Options

Whether you are already enrolled or enrolling for the first time, there are a few important things you can do during this period.

First, you can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, and vice versa. You can also change to a different Medicare Advantage plan if you already have one. At this time, you can also enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or cancel your coverage altogether.

Annual Enrollment Deadline

Schedules change and you get busy. So, if you happen to miss the deadline for enrolling, don’t panic!

While most of the time you may have to wait until the following year to enroll, you may still be allowed to enroll or alter your coverage by way of a Special Enrollment Period (SEP.)
