3 Things to Know About Composite Decking

An outdoor deck is a terrific addition to a home; not only does it add value to the home, it increases your living space and provides a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors. While wood is a beautiful and cost-friendly material for an outdoor deck, it requires more maintenance than some homeowners care to perform. If you’re thinking of replacing or building a deck, here are 3 things to know about composite decking:

1. Composite decking is a low-maintenance product that is usually comprised of wood and plastics. “Most composite decking materials require no staining or painting, and can last upwards of 25 years without any issues,” explained Jeremy Ahrens, Director of Sales for Alexander Lumber. “It’s a great option for any outdoor space where you want to be able to create your own style and not have to paint or stain it to keep that look.”

2. Composite decking comes in just about any style and color you can imagine. “Composite decking can be 100% PVC, which stays cooler and is available in many colors,” said Ahrens. “It can also contain a mixture of recycled wood and polymers (a greener product) that is more dense, and offers more color variations. Almost all composite decking is available with concealed fastening systems, so you don’t see any nails or screws, similar to the look of hardwood flooring in your home. Manufacturers also offer a full line of railings to complement most colors.”

3. Alexander Lumber sells Azek/Timbertech and Trex brands of composite decking. “We are a stocking dealer for multiple colors of these brands,” said Ahrens. “Both brands come in over 20 colors, offer many railing options, and have a terrific warranty. We have great displays at most of our locations to make your selection easier. We can help you with your design and color selection, and even recommend a contractor for the install.”
