Children and Firearms Safety Tips

One of the perks of owning a firearm is the feeling of security that comes from having the means to defend oneself should the need arise. For parents, this can be offset by the fear of gun accidents involving children. While firearm violence, as well as firearm-related accidents, have been on the decline for many years and continue to decrease, it’s still important to be as safe and informed as possible, especially parents who own firearms.

Proper storage of firearms is key. For a gun owner, especially one who keeps a gun for self defense, proper storage is a balancing act of keeping the gun accessible when it might be needed, but making it impossible for any unauthorized or accidental usage. Unloaded guns should be stored in a locked cabinet or safe at all times, and ammo should ideally be stored in a separate location. Whenever you’re away from your bedroom, your home defense weapon should be stored in a locked container. You should know where the weapon is at all times.

When your children are more mature, proper introduction to firearms and firearm safety is a must. Ensuring they know the rules of firearm safety, and the risks of improper handling, is vital. The more you can quell their curiosity about the firearm in a controlled environment, like at a shooting range, the less desire they will have to use it without your knowledge.

The leading cause of gun death in the U.S. is suicide, and access to a firearm increases the risk factor of someone considering suicide. Because of these two facts, it is extremely important to be invested in your child’s mental health. Be open and understanding when it comes to depression and other mental health issues, and realize that there are many treatment options available.
