3 Things to Know About Concealed Carry in Illinois

Obtaining a CCL (concealed carry license) is often the next step for many weapons enthusiasts, as it allows gun owners to carry a concealed firearm at any time. Having a concealed carry license offers a great sense of security and peace of mind, especially as a method of self-defense. Owning a CCL can be very rewarding in and of itself. Here are 3 things to know about concealed carry in Illinois:

1. Concealed carry is simply the ability to legally carry a loaded or unloaded firearm on your person, or in your car, while having it out of sight from people around you. Utilizing an outside-the-waistband holster would be an example of open carry, and is illegal. If you want to transport a firearm on your person or in your car without a CCL, it needs to be unloaded and in a secure case. If you have a CCL, you can carry the gun but it must be concealed.

2. Anyone over the age of 21 who has completed the required 16-hour training course, and already has their FOID (Firearm Owner’s Identification) card, is eligible to receive an Illinois CCL. Applicants are disqualified if, within the last five years, they have a misdemeanor that involves threatening violence, if they have two or more DUI offenses, or if they have been in a residential or court-ordered drug or alcohol treatment program.

3. If you’re interested in obtaining a concealed carry license in Illinois, do your research in advance.
