DeKALB - One resident is without a home after a fire inside an apartment at Oak Crest retirement center in DeKalb Saturday, according to DeKalb fire officials.

DeKalb firefighters were called to the 2900 block of Greenwood Acres Drive in DeKalb, part of Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, around 8:38 a.m. Saturday for reports of a structure fire, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from a hallway on the third floor. When they entered the apartment, crews saw smoke and a water sprinkler going off in the bedroom, according to the release.

Firefighters reported the flames were put out by the sprinkler system. Crews ventilated the apartment for smoke damage, and remained on the scene for two hours.

No one was injured in the fire, though the resident of the apartment has been displaced after damage to the unit cost an estimated $12,000, the release states. The resident is being assisted by Oak Crest property management.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, though an investigation continues by the DeKalb Fire Department.

Crews from Sycamore Fire Department and DeKalb police assisted.
