DeKALB – The DeKalb School Board discussed the creation of multiple job positions and altering differential compensations during its meeting Tuesday evening.
The board unanimously approved the creation of 11 long-term remote substitute teacher positions at the rate of $155 per day for the 2021-2022 school year only, according to district documents. Eight of the substitute teachers will teach for elementary schools, two for middle schools and one for the high school. The long-term remote substitute teacher will facilitate daily lessons in reading, writing and math to any student in quarantine across a given grade level.
The school board also approved a tentative negotiated contract update between the district and the paraprofessional’s union, the DeKalb Federation of School Assistants through 2025. Details of that contract were not available as of Tuesday’s published documents.
The substitute teachers will teach students that are in quarantine and who do not have the opportunity to get vaccinated. Students who qualify for, and opted not to get vaccinated, will receive traditional sick day support, such as homework.
The 11 teachers will be paid using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Funds, federal funding provided by the Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. ESSER Funds have been provided by Congress to help school districts address the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As students return to school after the pandemic, we need to address missed learning opportunities and think of the needs of teachers, students and their families,” said Deetra Sallis, director of human resources. “Any and all support in teaching and learning is a very positive thing.”
The school board will also bring back the creation of other positions during the next meeting: a family and community engagement coordinator paid a salary of $75,000 to $90,000 a year, art coordinator differential from a compensation of 0.3 to 0.6 and science club differential from a compensation of 0.3 to 0.4.
The next school board meeting will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 20.
