DeKALB – A DeKalb man was arrested following a report of shots fired early Friday morning in a mostly college housing residential neighborhood.
Dakari Williams, 24, of the 500 block of Normal Road in DeKalb, was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, which is a Class 4 felony, and illegal possession of a weapon by a felon, which is a Class 3 felony, said DeKalb Police Cmdr. Jason Leverton. If convicted, Williams could face up to five years in prison for the illegal weapon possession charge.
DeKalb Acting Police Chief Bob Redel said police were called just after midnight Friday to the 1000 block of Aspen Court for a report of shots fired.
“When the officers get there, they see a pile of casings on the ground,” Redel said.
Redel said police talked to witnesses and one witness said they saw a male come out of an apartment through a sliding door, shoot a gun several times in the air and walk back into the apartment. He said police ended up getting a search warrant for the apartment, executed it, found the gun that was believed to be used and arrested one occupant.
Redel said there were no injuries reported that were related to the incident and there wasn’t any related damage reported as of 12 p.m. Friday.
Redel said police treat any reports of shots fired as a threat under any circumstance. However, he said, he didn’t think the gun was aimed at a specific person, from what witnesses told police.
“But he was doing a reckless act that puts people in danger,” Redel said.
Williams did not go before a DeKalb County judge during bond call Friday afternoon.
DeKalb County court records related to the charges in connection with the shots fired incident were not immediately available online on Friday afternoon.
