DeKalb man accused of choking woman during argument over couch cushion

DeKALB – A DeKalb man is accused of choking a woman and prohibiting her from breathing during a recent argument over a couch cushion, according to DeKalb County court records.

Taivon Miles, 28, of the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive, DeKalb, was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony, and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted of the felony charge, Miles could face up to seven years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court documents, DeKalb police were called at 3:23 p.m. Monday to the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive for a report of a domestic dispute between a man and woman. An argument allegedly over a couch cushion resulted in a physical altercation.

“During the altercation, [Miles] strangled [the woman] with the inner portion of his elbow, restricting and impeding breathing of [the woman’s] airway,” according to court documents.

Miles also allegedly punched a TV, which cut his wrist, according to court documents. The woman’s shirt had blood on it, which records allege came from Miles. She also reported injuries, including a large bruise on her arm and red marks on her skin, which she told police were from the man allegedly punching and restraining her.

According to court records, Miles was appointed the county public defender to represent him for bond call only Tuesday and was given a recognizance bond, meaning he could be released from jail through his signature.

Miles also was ordered to not have any contact with the woman until further court order, according to court records.

Miles is due back in court at 3 p.m. Feb. 24.
