Common Grounds to reopen Friday in new Sycamore location

SYCAMORE – Common Grounds, previously located in downtown DeKalb, will be reopening Friday in Sycamore under a new name: Common Grounds Coffee, Tea, and Smoothies.

The coffee shop’s new address is 2180 Oakland Road in Sycamore, in the strip mall to the west of Sycamore Road at the south corner of Hy-Vee. Parking is available at the front and back of the building. The location was previously Grass Roots Juicery.

Jeff Foster, who owns the coffee shop with his wife Michelle, said that the move comes after the lease on his previous building ended.

“We wanted to move into a three-story building in downtown DeKalb, but had some issues with the owner, who would not make repairs on the roof,” he said. “Although finding a new location seemed like a setback at first, I see it as a growing opportunity for us. … After being closed for almost four months, I’m looking forward to seeing old and new faces, our loyal customers and those stopping by for the first time.”

Common Grounds is celebrating their fifth year in business this July and has a new slogan: “A place where art and community inspire everything we do.”

“There will be space in the back for paint and sip parties and art events,” Foster said. “We will have enough space for live performances as well. Although we had to pretty much give up on a larger arts space right now, we’re hoping to partner with nonprofits to bring the arts to the community.”
