High school sports roundup for Saturday, Oct. 16

Kaneland’s Evelyn Taylor and Sycamore’s Ashley Olson are headed to the tennis state finals after finishing third and fourth, respectively, at the Class 1A St. Francis Sectional in Wheaton on Saturday.

Sycamore took third place as a team behind only St. Viator and Carmel and Kaneland finished eighth in a 10-team field.

Class 2A Moline Sectional: At Moline, DeKalb finished in a three-way tie for seventh place in a nine-team field.

No individuals advanced to the state finals.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

DuPage Valley Conference Tournament: At Aurora, Riley Newport came away with an individual conference championship while the Barbs took third as a team behind Waubonsie Valley and Neuqua Valley.

Newport is a figure to watch at the upcoming state series after defeating all comers to secure the conference title.

”I got second last year,” Newport said. “I had a lot of confidence this year. I didn’t worry about what anyone else was doing. It’s the most confident I have felt about the team.”

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

DuPage Valley Conference Tournament: At Aurora, DeKalb came sixth at the conference tournament with 160 points.

Annika Burchell was the top finisher for the Barbs, taking 27th as an individual.

“I was pretty happy with my performance today,” Burchell said. “This week I found myself pushing in the second half of the race.”

Peoria Heights Invite: At Peoria, Indian Creek’s Caroline Bend placed ninth out of 242 runners with a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds at Detweiller Park.

VOLLEYBALL

Woodstock North Invite: At Woodstock, Kaneland emerged unscathed from the two-day and twelve-team invitational with a championship win that was sealed with a 25-11, 25-12 victory over Harlem.

The Knights also defeated Woodstock North (25-17, 25-20) and Burlington Central (26-24, 25-19, 15-9) to complete the clean sweep of the tournament.

The red-hot Knights are 29-3 overall this season and a very serious threat to any potential foe in the rapidly-approaching postseason.
