Local sports roundup for Wednesday, March 3

Northern Illinois led by as many as 17 points in its 75-66 women’s basketball victory over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb, thanks in large part to a career-high 21 points from DeKalb native A’Jah Davis.

Davis also hauled in nine rebounds and dished out five assists, while Paulina Castro knocked down five 3-pointers to total 15 points as the win boosted the Huskies to 12-10 overall and 10-7 in the Mid-American Conference.

NIU will finish its regular season slate Saturday against Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Kaneland 66, Rochelle 45: At Rochelle, the Knights improved to 5-5 on the season by cruising past the Hubs.

Jamari Meeks put up 21 points for Kaneland, while David Kolev notched a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Hinckley-Big Rock 72, Hiawatha 33: At Hinckley, the Royals routed the visiting Red Hawks to improve their record to 8-4.

Judson Scott scored a team-high 15 points for H-BR in the win, while Ben Hintzsche and Noah Badal tossed in 11 points each.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sycamore 65, LaSalle-Peru 39: At Sycamore, the Spartans improved to 11-2 on the season with a commanding win over the visiting Cavaliers.

Kaneland 52, Rochelle 38: At Kaneland, Chloe Conley knocked down three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 13 points as the Knights defended their home court against the Hubs.

The win improved Kaneland to 8-2.

Serena 59, Indian Creek 52: At Shabbona, Brooke Heiman gave the Timberwolves reason to celebrate in spite of a home loss. The senior scored 32 points for IC and eclipsed 2,000 career points.

GIRLS BOWLING

Sycamore 2,274, Marengo 2,102: At Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, Brandi Stover’s 589 series led the way for the Spartans as they took down Marengo.

Kiki Wittenberg was close behind with a 548 series and Trista Fioretto finished with a 545 series with included Marengo’s high game – a 212 in Game 1.

Tuesday’s results

Ottawa 2,686, Kaneland 1,043: The Knights’ three-person team took on Ottawa’s squad of six and were led by Ella Edwards, who had a high game of 160 and a series of 426.

Corinne Gatewood added a 340 series with a 126 high game, and Emma Fielder had a 277 series.

Sycamore 2,566, Rochelle 1,987: Maddie Lothrop put together a 626 series for Sycamore as the Spartans rolled over the Hubs.

Lothrop had a high game of 236 to highlight her commanding performance, while teammates Trista Fioretto (512) and Kiki Wittenberg (500) pitched in with strong series of their own.

BOYS BOWLING

Marengo 3,384, Sycamore 3,383: At Glo Bowl in Marengo, the Spartans couldn’t have made it any closer but were tagged with a loss after a clutch, 10th-frame strike from Marengo’s Tim Scholl that sealed their fate in a one-pin loss.

Sycamore’s Jeffery Gasso had a series 674 and games of 244 and 248. Gasso was supported by strong outings from Riley Witheburg (593) Tommy Reboleth (583) and Christian Lang (580).

Tuesday’s results

Ottawa 2,916, Kaneland 2,420: Corbin Vines provided a silver lining for Kaneland in the face of a loss by bowling a 616 series and a high game of 242.

Corbin Vines earned four conference points with a 616 3-game series.
