Local sports roundup for Wednesday, Feb. 24

Cam Russell was one of four boys basketball players to reach double digits for Indian Creek as the Timberwolves defeated Serena, 84-52, on Wednesday in Serena.

Russell scored 26 points to lead IC. Michael Lampson added 19 points, and Jordan Wortman had 11. Brennen McNally also had 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Drew Gaston had nine points and 13 assists.

Kaneland 41, Sandwich 39: At Sandwich, the Knights came away with a close win in Interstate Eight action.

David Kolev provided Kaneland with seven points, while Johnny Spallasso, Jacob Harrison and Troyer Carlson each had six points.

Hinckley-Big Rock 61, Somonauk 58: The Royals came away with the win in a game where the lead never was more than six points in either direction.

Judson Scott led the Royals (7-2, 5-0 Little 10) with 20 points, and Noah Badal scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. Riely Hogan had 10 points and went 5 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final 3 minutes.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Winnebago 59, Genoa-Kingston 28: The Cogs dropped the Big Northern Conference game on the road despite 13 from Lily McPherson.

Bridget Babb added six for the Cogs.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ball State 82, NIU 79: Northern Illinois University fell to 9-6 in Mid-American Conference play Wednesday night after an 82-79 loss to the Ball State Cardinals at the NIU Convocation Center, its third straight loss.

“We’re not happy with the outcome, but I think there’s a lot of positives that we can take from tonight’s game,” said head coach Lisa Carlsen. “It really came down to Ball State making a couple more plays, especially late in the game. That game had a tournament feel to it, and we’re going to look at the positives we did have tonight and hopefully rectify a few things and continue to push forward.”

Chelby Koker led the Huskies with 22 points, adding four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Janae Poisson tied a season-high with 20 points and tied a career-high with five 3-pointers. A’Jah Davis and Errin Hodges each had 10 points, with Davis leading NIU with nine rebounds.

BOYS BOWLING

Marengo 3,223, DeKalb 2,730: At Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb, Aaron Lewis’ 565 series with a high game of 203 led the Barbs during their loss to Marengo. Jacon Lindgren bowled a 549 series.
