DeKALB - A DeKalb man is facing multiple charges after police discovered methamphetamine, Xanax and a loaded gun in his car during a traffic stop initially made for suspected driving under the influence.
Calvin M. Johnson, 37, of the 800 block of West Hillcrest Drive is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful possession of ammunition by a felon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and armed violence.
If convicted of the most serious crime, armed violence and being an armed habitual criminal, both Class X felonies, Johnson could face up to 30 years in prison and fines up to $25,000.
Johnson appeared before DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick Friday for a virtual bond hearing from the DeKalb County Jail. Buick ruled Johnson’s bond be set at $150,000. He would need to post 10%, or $15,000 to be released from jail.
According to DeKalb County court records, Johnson has two felony convictions out of Cook County, both Class 2 felonies for the manufacturing and delivery of controlled substances.
According to DeKalb police reports, Johnson was pulled over and arrested in the 900 block of South Fourth Street around 1:57 p.m. Thursday. A passenger in the car, a woman, was asked by police to exit the car so it could be towed, police reported.
Police said the woman then grabbed a bag from the vehicle and attempted to leave, but police asked her to hand over the bag so they could search it. Inside, police reported they allegedly found a loaded handgun, which the woman allegedly told police she did not know was there.
During the search of the car, DeKalb police also reportedly found a bottle with capsules containing what was identified as ecstasy, a bag of powdered ecstasy and a bag of pills identified later by a CVS pharmacist as alprazolam, more commonly known as Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication.
Police conducted a field test of the powdered substance and capsules in the bottle, which allegedly showed probable presence of methamphetamine, according to court records.
Johnson allegedly told police the firearm and Xanax was his, police reported.
Johnson is next set to appear before a DeKalb County Judge for an arraignment at 9:45 a.m. July 1.
