COVID-19 Illinois hospital admissions showing signs of flattening

IDPH: 51 new deaths, 4,224 new cases

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 4,224 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 51 additional deaths Thursday.

As of late Wednesday, Illinois had 2,254 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Of those, 527 were in intensive care units, and 289 were on ventilators. New hospital admissions for COVID-19-like illness – defined as if a patient presents with fever and either cough or difficulty breathing, or is given a diagnosis of COVID-19 – appear to have flattened out over the past week.

New admissions reached a high of 235 on Aug. 27 and were down to 229 for Aug. 30, the most recent available day of data for this metric.

For Wednesday, the state administered 27,729 shots.

The state received the results of 102,791 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday afternoon. The state’s positivity rate went down to 4.8%.

Illinois has seen 1,532,344 total cases of the virus, and 24,030 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 29,068,354 tests since the start of the pandemic.

Vaccine update: As of Thursday, the IDPH reported a total of 16,409,305 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 13,978,485 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 6,764,410 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 53.09%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

Among Illinois residents 12 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 6,485,410 (59.8%)

At Least 1 Dose: 8,345,889 (77%)

Among Illinois residents 18 and older:

Fully Vaccinated: 6,068,324 (61.6%)

At Least 1 Dose: 7,745,328 (78.6%)

Fully Vaccinated: 1,572,522 (77%)

At Least 1 Dose: 1,913,757 (93.7%)

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

Regional update: All 11 regions in the state are in Phase 5.

The North Suburban (McHenry and Lake counties) region’s positivity rate decreased to 5.2%. Currently, 18% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average decreased to 5.8%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 5.0%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable one out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to a total of 134 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The West Suburban (DuPage and Kane counties) region’s positivity rate increased to 5.5%. Currently, 21% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 5.0%, and DuPage County’s increased to 5.7%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable one out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 209 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The South Suburban (Will and Kankakee counties) region’s positivity rate decreased to 6.4%. Currently, 26% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable seven out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 95 total COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

The North (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) region’s positivity rate decreased to 6.4%.

Currently, 16% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate stayed flat at 5.4%, Lee County’s rate decreased to 2.5%, and Whiteside County’s went down to 4.3%.

Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable two out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to 93 total COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The North-Central (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Woodford counties) region’s positivity rate stayed flat at 5.8%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 4.5%. Currently, 18% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations have increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region. The region is up to a total of 233 COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Chicago’s positivity rate stayed flat at 4.2%. Currently, 16% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for one out of the past 10 days.

Suburban Cook County’s positivity rate stayed flat at 4.8%. Currently, 16% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations have increased 10 out of the past 10 days in this region.
