1 in 3 Illinois residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19

State’s positivity rate stays flat at 3.3%, hospitalizations see a slight drop

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 2,410 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 30 additional deaths Wednesday, and a total of 9,546,833 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered.

For Wednesday, the state reported administering 96,415 shots, “including approximately 40,000 doses that were not reported by pharmacies over the weekend because of a national system issue,” IDPH said in a news release. “Additional doses could also be added.”

The seven-day rolling average of Illinois’ positivity rate stayed flat at 3.3%. The state received the results of 77,670 COVID-19 tests in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday afternoon.

Illinois has seen 1,346,398 total cases of the virus, and 22,096 people have died. The state has conducted a total of 23,007,188 tests since the start of the pandemic.

As of late Tuesday, Illinois had 2,060 COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Of those, 496 were in intensive care units, and 249 were on ventilators.

Vaccine update: As of Wednesday, IDPH reported a total of 12,078,725 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed statewide, with 9,546,833 vaccines administered.

As of the time this story was published, 4,213,268 of the population of Illinois have been fully vaccinated, or 33.07%. Illinois has a population of 12,741,080 people.

The state also reported it has 14,078 unusable doses. “Unusable vaccine is generally defined as the number of doses discarded in opened or unopened vaccine vials that are not used to vaccinate an eligible individuals. This could be due to a dropped syringe, temperature deviation, expiration of the vaccine at its stored temperature, or other issues in the storage and handling process,” according to IDPH.

There can be as much as a 72-hour delay in reporting from healthcare providers on vaccines administered.

In northern Illinois, here is the percentage of the population fully vaccinated by county:

Chicago: 32.23%

Suburban Cook: 34.68%

Lake: 30.26%

McHenry: 29.70%

DuPage: 37.33%

Kane: 29.53%

Will: 30.18%

Kendall: 30.91%

La Salle: 27.08%

Grundy: 30.49%

DeKalb: 27.23%

Ogle: 29.80%

Lee: 30.95%

Whiteside: 28.46%

Bureau: 29.33%

Bridge update: According to Gov. JB Pritzker’s plan announced March 18, the state needs 70% of Illinois residents ages 65 and older to have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine before it can advance to the state’s bridge phase that will open up capacity limits on all businesses. The state’s bridge phase remains on pause because of a rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

As of Wednesday, 79.78% of those 65 and older had received one dose of the vaccine, according to the state’s dashboard.

Also, according to the state’s dashboard, 55.37% of Illinois residents 16 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Regional update: Regional update: Currently, all 11 of the state’s health regions are in Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan.

Regional data from the IDPH remains on a three-day lag.

The North Suburban region (McHenry and Lake counties) has seen 102 consecutive days below 8% for its COVID-19 test positivity rate. The region’s positivity rate stayed flat at 3.6%. Currently, 26% of ICU beds are available.

The region has never dropped below the 20% threshold for ICU bed availability since tracking began.

Within this region, McHenry County’s seven-day positivity rate average decreased to 6.6%. Lake County, which does about two-thirds of the testing in the region, is reporting a rolling average of 2.8%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable seven out of the past 10 days in this region.

The West Suburban region (DuPage and Kane counties) has seen 105 consecutive days below 8%. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 5.1%. Currently, 21% of ICU beds are available.

Within this region, Kane County’s seven-day positivity decreased to 6.3%, and DuPage County’s decreased to 4.6%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable six out of the past 10 days in this region.

The South Suburban region (Will and Kankakee counties) has seen 107 consecutive days below 8%. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 5.8%. Currently, 21% of ICU beds are available.

Hospitalizations have increased six out of the past 10 days in this region.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside, and Winnebago counties) has maintained a positivity rate below 8% for 109 days. The region’s positivity rate stayed flat at 5.8%.

Currently, 19% of ICU beds are available. Wednesday is the 23rd straight day this region is under 20% ICU capacity.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate decreased to 5.0%, Lee County’s rate decreased to 1.3%, and Whiteside County’s stayed flat at 3.8%.

Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable nine out of the past 10 days in this region.

The North-Central region (Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Henderson, Henry, Kendall, Knox, La Salle, Livingston, Marshall, McDonough, McLean, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren, and Woodford counties) has seen 111 days below 8%. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 5.0%.

Within this region, La Salle County’s seven-day positivity rate decreased to 5.0%.

Currently, only 16% of ICU beds are available. Wednesday is the 27th day with ICU capacity below 20%. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for eight out of the past 10 days.

Chicago has seen 105 consecutive days below 8%. The region’s positivity rate stayed flat at 4.5%.

Currently, 20% of ICU beds are available. Hospitalizations decreased or remained stable for nine out of the past 10 days.

Suburban Cook County has seen 105 days below 8%. The region’s positivity rate decreased to 4.7%.

Currently, 19% of ICU beds are available. The region has been under the 20% threshold for nine straight days. Hospitalizations have decreased or remained stable 10 out of the past 10 days in this region.
