Severe Weather Preparedness Month

March is Severe Weather Preparedness Month in Illinois.

As the weather begins to shift from winter to spring, the threats for severe and dangerous weather such as thunderstorms, flooding and the continuing possibility of snow increase.

Here are some things to be aware of and some helpful tips so you’re prepared to address any dangers if and when severe weather occurs.

Have emergency supplies at the ready

Severe weather is unpredictable and dangerous, so it is a good idea to have certain emergency supplies on hand in places that you frequent the most, such as your home, work, and/or vehicle. These can and should include flashlights and radios with backup batteries for both, your cell phone and an extra charger, an extra change of clothing if necessary, bottled water and extra food if necessary.

Establish a communication plan

Make sure your cell phone is charged but be aware that there may be some slowdown in mobile networks because of an increase in traffic during severe weather. Pay attention to emergency alerts that you’ll receive on your phone. It is also a good idea to install apps for weather and disaster recovery if you don’t have them already.

Use the safety check-in features on social media channels to communicate with your family and those in your community to verify your safety and that of your loved ones and neighbors. Have your important contacts – family, friends, and emergency sources – stored in your phone so you can access them quickly.

Plan ahead as much as possible and stay informed

It is always a good idea to have a plan in place for you and your family should an emergency occur due to severe weather. Have an exit strategy for your home or work should you need to vacate the premises in a hurry. Pay attention to any emergency broadcasts on your local news sources and radio stations. Talk with your neighbors and friends in the community about being active and ready to help in unexpected situations.

Taking these steps beforehand will help you be prepared if an emergency weather situation arises.
