The Princeton City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to raise rates to open gravesites in city cemeteries.

City Clerk Pete Nelson reported to council members that rates had remained steady for the last 15 to 20 years, however the cost, if approved on second reading, will increase to accommodate an increased number of weekend burials.

Burial costs at Oakland and Elm Lawn cemeteries will be: $575 for weekday adult full-grave burial; $175 for weekday cremation or infant burial; $1,000 for weekend adult full-grave burial and $500 for weekend cremation or infant burial. Overtime costs will be added if the city is notified after 11 a.m. Friday for any Monday burial.
