On April 13, 1896, the Princeton-Illinois NSDAR chapter was organized by a small group of local women who wanted to honor their Revolutionary War patriots.
Illinois State Organization NSDAR also began in 1896. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890. Nationally and worldwide, there are now more than 3,000 chapters and more than 185,000 members. The society’s enduring mission is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism.
Princeton-Illinois Chapter sponsors the DAR Good Citizens Awards at all Bureau County high schools every year as well as the American History Essay Contests for junior high students.
Veterans throughout the county have been recognized for their service. Chapter members participate in Memorial Day and Veterans Day services annually with our Princeton Veterans Organization. Veterans at the LaSalle Veterans Home are honored on their birthdays, special holidays and at bingo parties. The chapter is part of a grounds beautification project at the LaSalle facility which is planned for this spring.
There have been patriotic displays at the Princeton Public Library for Constitution Week.
This year, the chapter will celebrate its 125th anniversary. It is noted that the chapter has been meeting throughout the pandemic via the internet with Zoom meetings. However, not all of the women have access to zoom.
The next meeting will be held on May 7 at 1:30 p.m. Members are encouraged to access Zoom for a short historical journey through the past 125 years.
Chapter registrar, Carmela Blanco, has been researching archives and has put together a pleasing presentation for the members to enjoy. There are pictures of members from many years of activities. Perhaps there is someone to recognize.
Members who do not usually work with a computer are definitely encouraged to attend the May virtual meeting. Members should ask a family member or friend to help.
Any woman 18 years or older who can prove lineage to a Revolutionary War Patriot is eligible to join. Interested prospective members can be helped in finding a patriot of their own.
If curious about joining the DAR, please contact any member or call 815-447-2433.
