Basketball Notebook: Hall’s Drake Garland advances to State 3-Point Showdown

Hall senior Drake Garland is going to state in the 3-Point Showdown.

He was one of four shooters to advance from the Class 2A Mendota Sectional finals Friday night prior to the championship game.

Garland, who was the regional champion on his home court, will shoot Saturday morning in Champaign in the IHSA State 3-Point Showdown Finals. There are 32 shooters in each class and the winners in each will meet for the King of the Hill competition Saturday evening.

Bureau Valley senior Carter Salisbury and Hall sophomore Andy Dye also competed Friday. They each made 9 of 15. Ten was needed.

Storm awards: Bureau Valley held its basketball awards night Thursday. Award winners were Layton Britt (Defensive Player of the Year), Adam Johnson (Leading Rebounder) and Salisbury (MVP, Best Free Throw %).

Girls state champions crowned: The first set of four one-day IHSA State girls basketball champions were crowned Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal. It was the first time all four classes were played out on the same weekend.

In 1A, No. 1 ranked Brimfield edged Galena, 32-31, on a last-second free throw.

In 2A, No. 2 ranked Quincy Notre Dame defeated No. 1 ranked Winnebago, 63-56.

In 3A, Mundelein Carmel defeated LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy, 43-39.

In 4A, Lincolnshire Stevenson defeated Barrington, 55-43.

Last-second shots: Bureau Valley senior Carter Salisbury finished with 1,103 career points, edging Luke Davis (1,100), the program’s first star, to become No. 7 all time for the Storm. Salisbury scored 687 points this year. The top six for the Storm are Parker Neuhalfen (2012-15) 2,228, Reuben Slock (1997-2001) 1,771, Phil Endress (1999-2002) 1,463, Kale Barnett (2015-19) 1,372, Tommy Johnston (2012-15) 1,253 and Nate Paup (2016-19) 1,143.
