Bureau Valley makes quick work of Kewanee

Volleyball: Bureau Valley def. Kewanee 25-11, 25-15

MANLIUS - The Bureau Valley Storm played like they had a good dinner waiting at home for them Tuesday night.

The Storm rode the hot serving of sophomore Kate Salisbury (12 points, 1 ace) and juniors Camryn York (8 points, 1 ace) and Annabelle Myong (8 points, 2 aces) to make quick work of Kewanee in Three Rivers East volleyball play at the Storm Cellar, winning 25-11, 25-15.

“It was a nice match and we never gave in. We were always on top and I like that,” BV coach Caitlyn DeMay said. “I saw the confidence that I wanted to see toward the end of the season. We never gave in and we kept working hard until the end.”

York got the Storm rolling in the first game with an eight-point string, including her ace, to run the Storm to a 20-8 lead, capped by a kill by Myong. Myong hit for the sideout and then served out the final two points, dealing an ace to finish off the 25-11 winner.

The Storm stayed hot in Game 2 with Myong serving up two aces for an early 9-2 lead.

Sophomore Emma Stabler sided out with a block at 12-4 and added a kill. Salisbury (8 assists, 5 digs) ripped off five more points, including two straight aces, before Stabler put her No. 17 on the board to give the Storm a 17-4 lead.

BV ran its lead to 20-10 before Neponset product Emma Crofton knocked down two kills for Kewanee to make it 20-12.

Stabler, who led BV with seven kills, hit for another Storm point and senior Ashley Nordstrom dealt an ace to make it 24-14. Kewanee followed a service error by BV with one of its own to end the set and match, 25-15, for the Storm.

In addition to the ace servers, the Storm got solid contributions from Tyra Sayler (8 digs), Nordstrom (4 digs, 2 points, 1 ace), Myong (2 blocks), Nikki Kerber (3 blocks) and Kyra Stoller (3 digs, 2 points).

“We’re all family and it was nice to everyone contribute and everyone’s enthusiasm and the team aspect tonight,” DeMay said. “I thought Ashley Nordstrom did well. Emma Stabler came in and gave some great front row hits. Kyra’s serving and playing in the back row. It’s great to have her back. Our DSs were great. Tyra was great in the back row. It was a great team win.”

The Storm finished out at the .500 mark in conference play at 6-6, improving to 11-18 overall after dropping all four matches at Saturday’s Mendota Invite. BV will hold Senior Night in Thursday’s match vs. Stark County before hosting regional next week.

Kewanee fell to 8-26 overall, ending conference play 2-10.

Bureau Valley swept all levels of play with the sophomores winning 25-20, 25-21, and the freshmen winning 25-18, 27-29, 25-17.
