Princeton soccer aiming for ‘Super’ success

The Princeton Tigresses are taking their next step in the 2021 Class 1A Girls Soccer postseason and they are aiming for more super and sweet play.

Princeton (11-4) will make its fourth super-sectional appearance in school history when it meets West Chicago Wheaton Academy (17-4) at 4 p.m. in the Mendota Super-Sectional. PHS is 2-1 in three previous super-sectional contests.

The Tigresses beat Rockford Christian 4-3 Friday in Rockford to claim its third sectional championship.

Wheaton Academy beat Lisle 2-0 for its sectional title on its home pitch.

PHS won its last sectional championship in 2012, defeating Williamsville 3-0 at Chillicothe. The Tigresses went on to fall 3-0 to Manteno in the Urbana Super-Sectional.

PHS won back-to-back sectionals in 2006 and 2007, defeating Indian Creek 2-1 and Mendota 4-0.

The Tigresses also enjoyed super-sectional success those seasons, defeating Bloomington Central Catholic (2-0) and Indian Creek (1-0).

In two state appearances, PHS dropped their first matches each year, falling to Chicago Latin 5-2 in 2006 and Hampshire 1-0 in 2007.

Super-sectional pairings

In other super-sectional matches, Normal U-High (14-6) plays Quincy Notre Dame (15-1-1) in Bloomington, Elmhurst Timothy Christian (15-2) and Richmond-Burton (14-2-3) meet in Elmhurst on Monday while Alton Marquette (13-6-1) and Belleville Althoff (19-2) meet Tuesday in Columbia.

The winners of the Mendota and Columbia super-sectionals will meet in the state semifinals at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18 Hoffman Estates. The winners of the Bloomington and Elmhurst super-sectionals will follow at 1 p.m.

State finals will be held Saturday, June 19 with third place at 10 a.m. and first place at 2 p.m.
