Princeton soccer taking page out of past

Princeton will play for its first sectional championship in nine years Friday in Rockford.

The Tigresses (10-4) will play Rockford Christian (9-6) on its home pitch at 4:30 p.m. on the north side of Rockford.

The Royal Lions beat Oregon 3-1 in Tuesday’s semifinals while PHS defeated Rockford Lutheran 5-0 at home.

Rockford Christian posted the same 5-0 win over Rockford Lutheran two weeks ago.

Princeton is 2-1 in past sectional championship matches.

It last played for the sectional championship in 2012, defeating Williamsville 3-0 at Chillicothe. The Tigresses went on to fall 3-0 to Manteno in the Urbana Super-Sectional.

Princeton won back-to-back sectionals in 2006 and 2007, defeating Indian Creek (2-1) and Mendota (4-0).

The Tigresses also enjoyed super-sectional success those seasons, defeating Bloomington Central Catholic (2-0) and Indian Creek (1-0).

In two state appearances, PHS dropped their first matches each year, falling to Chicago Latin (5-2) in 2006 and Hampshire (1-0) in 2007.
