McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce rolls out Wonka’s Golden Envelopes fundraiser in lieu of annual gala

Participants vie for chance to win one of more than 50 raffle items, plus additional cash prizes

A fundraiser for the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce gives participants the opportunity to find golden tickets a la Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and win prizes, the Chamber said in a news release.

The event was conceived in place of the Chamber’s annual gala this year, according to the release.

McHenry Area Chamber President Molly Ostap said in the release her gala committee was quick to switch gears and design a completely different event.

“Because of [COVID-19] restrictions, we knew we weren’t going to be able to put 300 people in the same room in January,” she said in the release. “We were disappointed because not only is that event so much fun; it is also a significant fundraiser for the Chamber. Rather than try to host the gala virtually, we have taken the opportunity to create something new for 2021.”

Wonka’s Golden Envelopes, sponsored by Porte Brown, gives participants a chance to win one of more than 50 raffle items, including a Weber grill and $1,000 cash. Five participants will win instant cash prizes through the sponsorship of Gary Lang AutoGroup.

The fundraiser is based on the purchase of envelopes that will enter the buyer into a drawing to win one of the prizes, according to the release.

The number shown on the envelope determines the cost and the number of entries in the drawing. For example, envelope #1 will cost $1 and gives the buyer a chance to win a prize, while envelope #30 costs $30 and gives them 30 chances to win prizes.

There is no limit to how many prizes one person can win, but there is a limit to the number of envelopes. Envelopes are numbered one through 200, and more than 60 envelopes have been sold since the event launched.

The raffle will be livestreamed from 7 to 9 p.m. March 6, plus 50 people may buy in-person tickets to see the raffle pull live at Metalwood Grille. A $40 ticket includes two drink tickets, a gourmet charcuterie box, a half-pound box of Riverside Chocolate Factory assorted chocolates and additional game opportunities.

Those people watching the livestream from their residence also can order a VIP at Home Package to be delivered to their home or office the day before the event.

The YouTube link will be on the home page closer to the event date. For information and to buy envelopes, go to or call the McHenry Chamber at 815-385-4300.
