Murder mystery planned for around downtown McHenry

Featuring a combination of a scavenger hunt app, video clues and live interactions, a new murder mystery event will take participants around downtown McHenry as they try to solve the case.

The event is a new one being put on by the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 9.

“It’s a murder mystery, a scavenger hunt, and an escape room all in one,” the Chamber said in a release.

“We are excited to showcase our local businesses through this fun, new lens,” Chamber President Molly Ostap said in a statement. “Traditional opportunities for visibility, like expos, have become difficult with the pandemic. We wanted to create a safer alternative that our community could participate in and really enjoy. Who doesn’t love a good murder mystery?”

Tickets cost $20 and include the suspect guide, a commemorative backpack, water bottle and other goodies needed to solve the case. Only 300 murder mystery tickets will be sold.

While the murder mystery game is not designed for children, families may choose to bring their kids.

The chamber recommends buying a “Scavenger Hunt” ticket for kids age 12 and younger, though families are welcome to choose the full ticket for their children.

The Scavenger Hunt is an accompanying game that kids can play alongside their parents. The cost is $5, and includes a detective pack and scavenger hunt.

Participation requires access, per team, to at least one charged smartphone, running a minimum operating system of iOS10 or Android version 6.0. The event takes place both inside and outside, and while a trolley will run between downtown locations, a lot of walking is involved.
