Maple Sugaring Days weekend on tap in St. Charles

Kane County Forest Preserve District volunteer Suzi Myers on Sunday explained to families the science of making maple syrup during Maple Sugaring Days at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.

The Kane County Forest Preserve District’s popular Maple Sugaring Days weekend returns in March.

Festivities run from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., in St. Charles.

Forest Preserve naturalists will teach how to turn tree sap into syrup, giving visitors an opportunity to try drilling and setting a tap for taste samples, according to a news release. Maple Sugaring Days will include a hike to learn how to distinguish maples from other species of hardwood trees.

Visitors will have ice cream in the Maple Cafe, and hot chocolate will be available for purchase. The Creek Bend Nature Center will be open for visitors to enjoy the interactive exhibits and make a craft to take home with them.

No registration is required for the event, and admission is free. Creek Bend Nature Center is set within the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve.
