Sculptor Jim Jenkins of Geneva among exhibit’s artists linked to Fermilab

Aurora Public Art announces “Accelerating Inspiration: Art from Fermilab,” its gallery show opening with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, on the third floor of the David L. Pierce Art & History Center.

“Accelerating Inspiration: Art from Fermilab” features the work of three artists with three unique visions, expressing their artistic connections to Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, a release stated. From its founding, the lab has encouraged the use of art to connect complex ideas with the public.

Jim Jenkins of Geneva creates kinetic sculptures with repurposed materials, expressing objects in plain view or secrets deeply hidden.

Lindsay Olson’s richly embroidered and beaded textiles connect viewers with the Standard Model, the discovery of the Higgs boson and neutrino research at the lab. She and Jenkins were artists in residence at Fermilab.

Georgia Schwender’s meticulous and expressive cyanotype process prints of bubble chamber images link the long history of particle accelerator research at the lab. She is Fermilab’s longtime visual arts coordinator.

All three artists are passionate about their artistic practice and continue to accelerate inspiration from Fermilab.

“This show highlights and celebrates the connections between art and science,” Jenn Byrne Evans, Public Art director, said in the release. “It is an excellent show to reopen the gallery after 16 months of being closed due to COVID-19.”

The exhibit will run through Sept. 25. The artists will provide a gallery talk at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.

Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The city of Aurora is following CDC, state, and county health guidelines for COVID safety measures.

The gallery and all events are sponsored by the city of Aurora. All are free and open to the public. Updates will be available on Aurora Public Art’s social media pages (@AuroraPublicArt on Facebook and Instagram).
