Woodstock man killed after semitruck crashes on Route 173 west of Antioch

A 72-year-old Woodstock man was killed after the semitruck he was driving crashed Monday on Route 173 in Antioch Township, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency responders were dispatched about noon Monday to Route 173 and Converse Road, which is west of Antioch and north of Fox Lake, where they found a 1990 Peterbilt semitruck pulling a Trinity trailer with major damage.

A preliminary investigation showed the driver of the Peterbilt, the 72-year-old male of Woodstock, was westbound on Route 173 when the truck began veering to the left for an unknown reason, according to a news release. The Peterbilt and trailer, which was loaded with about 25 tons of granular sludge, crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a guardrail on the south side of the roadway.

The Peterbilt continued west and the trailer rolled, spilling its load, according to the release. The truck and trailer partially jackknifed.

The driver was extricated from the cab by paramedics and taken to the Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, where he later was pronounced deceased, according to the release.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy, according to the release.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
