Man dies in I-55 crash involving wrong-way driver: coroner

A man was killed after his vehicle was struck by another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on Interstate 55 in Wilmington.

Nicholas Ercolini, 33, of Blackstone was pronounced deceased at 12:38 a.m. Monday in the emergency room of AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

"Mr. Ercolini was the driver of a vehicle on northbound Interstate 55 that was struck by another vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes on Interstate 55 at mile post 238 in Wilmington," officials said.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

"The final cause and manner of death will be determined at a later date pending police, autopsy and toxicological reports," officials said.
