Foles injury throws Bears' QB problems into further doubt

Details about Bears quarterback Nick Foles' injury at the end of Monday night's loss to the Minnesota Vikings remain uncertain at this early stage.

Head coach Matt Nagy characterized it as a hip or leg injury. Nagy said Monday night that Foles is still being evaluated. Foles was carted off the field in the final minute, not putting any weight on his right leg.

“I know he’s upset,” Nagy said. “It’s been frustrating, it’s been hard. That’s the part that’s difficult through all this because no one wants it more than him, to be out there, to fight with his teammates.”

Monday was another poor offensive performance, but the injury made a bad night much worse. It throws the Bears’ immediate future into doubt as the team embarks on a 13-day layoff before facing the Green Bay Packers on Nov. 29.

Backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky missed his second consecutive game due to a shoulder injury. Nagy was hesitant to say anything at this point, but he sounded hopeful that Trubisky could play in 13 days if Foles can’t.

“I don’t know yet about Mitch,” Nagy said. “I think there’s a possibility, but I don’t know that for sure. I think it’s going to be day by day.”

Third-string quarterback Tyler Bray came in to finish the final drive, completing just one pass on five attempts, and ending the Bears' night with a turnover on downs.

With Foles’ injury, the Bears undoubtedly lost one of their leaders. Whether Foles was playing well or not, he had the support of his teammates every time he stepped onto the field.

“It’s tough,” Bears safety Eddie Jackson said. “It’s one of those breath-takers, especially seeing Nick [go down], a guy like him with his leadership, his ability, what he brings to this offense and this team and this organization.”

Cordarrelle Patterson said it hurt seeing Foles carted off.

“We know how much work Nick puts in each and every day, the grind he put in,” Patterson said. “To see a guy like that go down, it's heartbreaking.”
