Bears running back David Montgomery will be in concussion protocol this week

Bears running back David Montgomery did indeed suffer a concussion in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans, coach Matt Nagy said Monday.

“He is in [concussion] protocol,” Nagy said. “So again, that’s out of our hands. We’ll see how he does. I don’t have any more updates other than that right now.”

Bears defensive back and special teams contributor Sherrick McManis also broke an index finger in Sunday’s game, Nagy said.

Montgomery ran up the middle for four yards on a second-and-9 play with about six minutes remaining in the game. Montgomery walked off the field gingerly after taking a hit to the helmet. He did not return to Sunday’s game.

The second-year pro finished his day with 30 rushing yards on 14 carries, and 12 receiving yards on three catches. He also fumbled once in the third quarter, a turnover that Titans cornerback Desmond King returned for a touchdown.

Backup running back Ryan Nall played for 10 snaps Sunday. After Montgomery left the game, Nall caught four passes for 35 yards, including his first career touchdown. Rookie running back Artavis Pierce also came in for one snap, but did not see the ball.

Montgomery’s status for next week will likely be in doubt all week. If there is a positive, it’s that the Bears don’t play until Monday night, when the Minnesota Vikings visit Soldier Field in Chicago, which should give Montgomery an extra day to recover. Montgomery has never missed game in his short pro career.
