Prep roundup: Newport wins regional as DeKalb advances, IC's Bend qualifies

Riley Newport won the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional on Saturday, putting in the only sub-16 minute time of the day.

Newport finished in 15:53.96 to lead the Barbs, while Alex Boyden finished in 16:28.09, good for fourth. DeKalb finished in a tie for second with Huntley with 76 points, behind champ Jacobs.

"I think he kind of ran race he knew he could," coach Mike Wolf said. "He was in the lead group and slowly pulled away. He pulled away and really showed his strength in the second half of the race. He was probably the favorite to win and took control of the race in the second half."

DeKalb will compete next week at the Lyons Sectional. There is no state tournament this year.

"I like where we're at," Wolf said. "Alex finished fourth. It was a big race for him. It was a strong one-two punch and are 3-4-5-6 ran well, now we just hope they get close to 1-2. We have work to do but it was a strong performance for him today."

H-BR, Indian Creek seasons end at Elgin: The Royals were 10th while the Timberwolves weren't able to field a full team at the Harvest Christian Academy Regional.

Tyler Smith led the Royals in 19:59.55 to take 50th while teammate James Simpkins was 52nd in 20:07.06.

G-K season ends in Oregon: The Cogs took 11th at the Class 1A Oregon Regional.

Nathan Brening paced the Cogs with a 55th place finish in 20:39.2

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

DeKalb duo on to sectionals: Annika Burchell and Leah Valentiner earned spots in the Class 3A Lyons Sectional next week.

Burchell took 19th in the Class 3A Rockford Guilford Regional in 20:31.33. Valentiner was 26th in 20:54.53.

Bend advances for Indian Creek: Caroline Bend finished in seventh place on Saturday at the Class 1A Harvest Christian Academy Regional, clocking in at 20:29.45.

The Timberwolves did not field a full team. Bend will compete next week at the Harvest Christian Academy sectional.

G-K eighth at Oregon: The Cogs finished with 205 points, good for eighth at the Class 1A Oregon Regional.

Kaitlyn Jerbi led the Cogs in 28th place in 22:57.7.

GIRLS SWIMMING

DeKalb-Sycamore wraps up season: The Barbs took 11th at the St. Charles North Sectional with three points, wrapping up the season.

Angelica Sanyal did the scoring for the Barbs, taking 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.97.
