High school sports roundup for Saturday, Oct. 24

Huntley’s Breanna Burak, Molly Allen and Brittney Burak finished 3-4-5 to lead the Red Raiders to the Class 3A Guilford Cross Country Regional championship Saturday in Rockford.

The Raiders finished with 42 points, two better than second-place Hononegah. Jacobs (95), Dundee-Crown (110) and Auburn (124) rounded out the five teams that qualified for next week’s Lyons Sectional. The top five teams and top five individuals not on those teams advance.

Huntley has won back-to-back regional titles and four in six years.

Guilford’s Michelle Gasmund won the race in 18:42.00, Jacobs’ Kelly Carpenter was second in 18:56.07.

After Huntley took the next three spots, Hononegah took the three after that to make it close for the team title. Grace Allen (13th) and Genevieve Collatz (17th) were Huntley’s other two scoring runners.

Jacobs advanced with Elisabeth Kania (14th), Avery Mason (18th), Elizabeth Proctor (30th) and Madeline Osmanski (31st) as its scoring runners.

Kylee Brodie (10th) and Melina Garcia (11th) led the way for D-C. Pundit Terreh (27th), Paulina Tinajero (28th) and Norah Petinaux (34th) were the Chargers’ other scoring runners.

Class 3A Grant Regional: At Fox Lake, Cary-Grove's Maggie Mason finished sixth to led the Trojans to a team championship with 74 points.

Morgan Dieschbourg took 11th for C-G, which finished six points ahead of second-place Lake Forest. Warren was third with 89.

Jocelyn Onstot (15th), Abby Williams (17th) and Delaney Blohm (25th) finished the scoring for the Trojans.

Class 2A Antioch Regional: Prairie Ridge's Rachel Soukup took third to lead the Wolves to fourth place as a team and a qualifying spot in next week's Lakes Sectional.

Rylee Lydon was ninth for Prairie Ridge, Bridget Jewell was 16th, Olivia McPherson was 24th and Sophie Robinson was 28th.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Class 3A Guilford Regional: At Rockford, Andrew Doetsch was third and Connor Maloney was fifth as Jacobs won its first regional team title since 2013.

Jacobs put its five scoring runners in the top 17 to win with 49 points. Huntley and DeKalb tied with 76 (Huntley took second with a higher-placed sixth runner), Hononegah (100) and Auburn (138) were the other teams to qualify for next week’s Lyons Sectional.

Dundee-Crown (139) was in sixth by one point.

Kyle Horn (12th), Adam Lakeman (16th) and Aidan DeMuth (17th) were Jacobs’ other scoring runners.

Huntley was led by Thomas Patel (eighth) and Ryan Besch (10th). Charlie Kucz (13th), Luke Grubbs (21st) and Owen Cravens (24th) were the Red Raiders’ other scorers.

D-C’s Tyler Toms (15th) and Christian Azar (18th) qualified as individuals.

Class 3A Grant Regional: At Fox Lake, Ian Barnes took third place to lead Cary-Grove to fifth as a team for the final qualifying spot.

Libertyville (49), Warren (61), Highland Park (89), Grant (119) and C-G (148) were the qualifying teams.

James Grant (18th), Dominic Garrard (28th), Carson Hendrey (38th) and Anthony Zamudio (61st) were the Trojans’ other scoring runners.

McHenry’s Carlos Montes (ninth) and Enrique Robles (21st) grabbed two of the five individual qualifying spots.

Class 2A Antioch Regional: Prairie Ridge freshman Will Gelon took second to Grayslake Central's Bryan Vale and helped the Wolves advance to the Lakes Sectional as a team.

Vale won in 15:54.7, 2 seconds ahead of Gelon. Grayslake Central won the team title with 47 points, followed by Vernon Hills (65), Lakes (76), Prairie Ridge (108) and Wauconda (146).

Ian Mahon took ninth for Prairie Ridge, Charlie Inion was 24th, Luke Kim was 33rd and Kevin Koch was 40th.

Woodstock North’s Jorge Aragon (11th) and Harvard’s Steve Austin (19th) qualified as individuals.

Class 2A Kaneland Regional: At Maple Park, Hampshire's Isai Morales was runner-up and Aidan Gonzalez was fifth as the Whip-Purs took third place as a team.

Kaneland, last year’s 2A state champion, won with 63 points. Burlington Central (78), Hampshire (79) and Sycamore (80) had the next three spots and all advance to the Lakes Sectional.

Burlington’s Robert Perry was fourth and Yusuf Baig was sixth.

Class 1A Harvest Christian Regional: At Elgin, Johnsburg's Andrew Ardon took 15th and grabbed one of the five individual qualifying spots to next week's Harvest Christian Sectional.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Stevenson Sectional: At Lincolnshire, Huntley (51 points) and Crystal Lake South co-op (50) took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the final meet of the season. Barrington won the team title with 223 points, followed by Stevenson with 212.5. Jacobs co-op (23) was eighth, Cary-Grove (19) was ninth and Dundee-Crown (8) was 11th.

Jacobs co-op's Jenny Tokarz had a pair of fifth-place swims in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.50) and 500 free (5:18.42). Crystal Lake South co-op's Avery Watson finished sixth in the 200 free (1:59.22), sixth in the 500 free (5:19.22) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (59.69).

Huntley's Ella Young was sixth in the 200 IM (2:15.13) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.04). C-G's Emily Marks was seventh in the 100 free (54.74), D-C's Ali Fitzgerald took seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.64), C-G's Maddie Dolezal placed seventh in the 500 free (5:26.76) and Huntley's Jillian Cherwin was seventh in the 200 IM (2:16.62).

South co-op's Maddy Uhl placed eighth in the 100 free (55.20),, Mackenzie Resch was eighth in the 50 free (25.54) and Olivia Dannhaus was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.12). Huntley's Ashley Garrard finished eighth in the 200 free (2:00.85).

Highland Park Sectional: At Highland Park, Richmond-Burton's Eleni Gewalt captured the 100 free individual title with a time of 52.17 and was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.71. Deerfield (171) won the team title, followed by Lake Forest (147). Woodstock North co-op (34) was sixth and McHenry (26) was eighth.

Marian Central's Tessa Jones placed runner-up in the 200 IM (2:09.46), third in the 500 free (5:12.41) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.33).

Woodstock North co-op's Hannah Blaksley took third in the 50 free (24.68), while teammate Haley Halsall took fourth in the 500 free (5:16.34) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:00.53).

McHenry's Melisa Nava was sixth in the 200 free (2:03.03) and teammate Reilly Byron was eighth in the 200 IM (2:17.23).
