Lockport man caught in Joliet with gun in waistband: cops

A Lockport man was arrested after officers found a handgun in his waistband, police said.

The charges against Jakhari Blakney, 19, of the 200 block of Dellwood Avenue, in connection with the incident will mark his third felony case this year in Will County, court records show.

About 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, officers stopped a vehicle near Collins and Liberty streets after observing a traffic violation, Joliet police said.

During the stop, officers “noted the presence” of marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said. A passenger later identified as Blakney had “refused to provide proof of identification upon request from officers,” police said.

Blakney was ordered out of the vehicle multiple times but he still refused to cooperate, police said. The officers opened the passenger door but Blakney attempted to close the door and a short struggle ensued, police said.

“During the struggle, officers located a handgun in the waistband of the passenger,” police said.

Blakney was arrested and eventually identified after he provided a fictitious name to the officers upon their arrival at the police department, police said.

Blakney was charged with obstructing identification, resisting officers and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, court records show.

On July 7, Blakney was charged with burglary, resisting an officer, obstructing identification and trespass on right of way.

On March 11, Blakney was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, resisting an officer and possession of a firearm without a valid owner’s identification card.
