Spring Valley OKs $300,000 meter purchase

Aldermen also approve costs to repair a generator

SPRING VALLEY – Spring Valley City Council has approved a loan from Spring Valley City Bank to replace water meters in the city.

The loan, not to exceed $300,000, will cover the meters and installation. It is expected to be a one-year loan, and the council anticipates costs to be covered by grant funds. Aldermen discussed the project at their last meeting. The loan will be processed once an ordinance is officially approved at their next meeting.

The council also approved costs to repair a generator at the water treatment plant not to exceed $18,267.

Alderman Ken Bogacz questioned whether the council should seek alternate bids before accepting a bid by Evapar, an Indiana-based contractor.

Streets Supervisor Jeff Norton said there are few Generac-certified providers, calling them "few and far between" and said the firm was recommended by the original equipment provider and has been servicing parts for the city for about three years.

Norton said the costs had "worse-case scenario" built in the funding, including travel and lodging costs, but in the past, the company has treated the city well, so he felt they were a good bet for the work. The generator, which was installed in about 2006, would cost upwards of $200,000-$300,000 to replace.
