Chicago man found guilty of 2017 domestic battery in Willowbrook

A Chicago man was found guilty Thursday of beating his former girlfriend and mother of their two children in a Willowbrook hotel in 2017.

Dwayne Dykes, 42, of the 5000 block of South Wood Street, Chicago, was found guilty of one count of aggravated domestic battery and two counts of domestic battery following a three-day trial at which the victim refused to testify, according to a DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office news release.

On June 21, 2017, Dykes and the woman were staying at a hotel in Willowbrook. A verbal altercation between the two ensued escalating to a physical altercation in which Dykes punched the victim in the face and then kicked her after she fell to the ground, the release stated.

Dykes was arrested and appeared in DuPage County Bond Court the following day where his bond was set at $250,000. On March 22, 2019, Dykes posted the necessary 10%, or $25,000, and was released from custody.

“This afternoon, despite the fact that the victim refused to testify against Mr. Dykes, Judge MacKay found the defendant guilty of physically assaulting the mother of his two children,” DuPage County States Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “I would like to thank Judge MacKay for ensuring a fair trial for both sides in this case. ”

Dykes’ next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 18 for sentencing. Because of his history, Dykes faces Class X felony sentencing guidelines which is between six to 30 years in prision. Following today’s verdict, Dykes’ bond was revoked and he was immediately taken into custody.
